| Match report | Fulford began the tournament versus Howden Town. Fulford started brightly annd played some great football and took the lead when Joe C laid the ball off to Harrison who whipped in a great right-wing cross that was volleyed in by Will at the back post. Joe C then hit the post with a long range shot. In the second half the woodwork was hit twice in quick succession as Harrison's shot hit the post and Will's rebound struck the bar. Fulford then paid for not taking their chances when Howden equalised on the break when a long ball out of defence bounced over the head of the Fulford defence and was smashed in on the half-volley by the Howden striker. Next up was Cawood & Wistow. Fulford made hard work of this game, but won thanks to a powerful near post header by Joe I from a Joe C corner. The third game was versus Thorpe Reds. Fulford played some great football and took the lead when a neat passing move involving all the midfield led to Will scoring from close range. Fulford dominated possession, but required some timely interceptions from Peter when Thorpe broke forward. Fulford added a second when Joe C scored direct from a corner. The final group game was against Upton United. It was a tight game and Fulford's best chance fell to Joe I, who went through one-on-one with the keeper, who did well to save the shot. Joe reacted quickly to the rebounding ball and was unlucky to see his header hit the post. The game ended in a 0-0 draw which was enough to see Fulford go through as group winners. The semi-final was against an impressive Thorpe Blues team. Fulford nearly went one up in the first half when a Joe I shot from the inside left position beat the keeper but crashed against the bar. Fulford then put together a fine passing move when Joe I found Will down the left, who hooked the ball across goal to the on-rushing Joe C, who pulled the ball down with a great first touch and hit a left foot half-volley, but was denied by a great save by the Thorpe keeper. Thorpe always looked dangerous and Harry and Tom B had to be sharp to deny the tricky Thorpe striker, who nearly broke through , but was forced wide by Tom H who came off his line well, and the chance was gone. Fulford got the winner with 3 minutes remaining when Harrison fed Joe I who beat his man down the left and fired a cross into the six yard box that was tapped home by Will. That put Fulford into the final where we hoped to be facing a Wheldrake team containing Tom Grantham, as they had topped the other group. However Upton had won the other semi-final 3-1. The final had few clear cut chances and Upton's best attempts were long, wind-assisted throws into the penalty box, that were dealt with very well by the defence and Tom H. As the game went on Fulford began to control the game, particularly as we entered golden goal extra time. Harrison had an excellent shot well saved by the Upton keeper. Joe C then hit a long range shot that was curling into the far corner, but was deflected away by an Upton defender. The most agonising moment came from a Joe C corner, which was fired in low into the penalty area, but a-la Gazza v Germany in Euro 96, none of the Fulford attackers could get a touch on the ball that was needed to turn it in, and the ball went straight through and out for a throw in. Fulford felt confident that they would have got a winner if the game had gone on any longer, but it finished 0-0 and penalties it was. Fulford scored their first three penalties through Joe C, Tom B & Joe I. Upton scored their first two, but Tom H saved the third to give Fulford the advantage. However Will's penalty was saved and Upton levelled it up. Harrison's penalty was then superbly saved by the Upton keeper. Upton scored their final penalty to give them a 4-3 win. Congratulations to Upton United on lifting the trophy and in particular to their keeper for making some great saves. |
