Match report   So the final league game of the season was upon us and the super Foxes required victory against Poppleton in order to secure 2nd place in the league, abound rumours that they could only field 7 players. On the day, there was scorching beautiful sunshine and the Pop players kept turning up 1 by 1 until I think I counted 12 in all. Looks like the Pop management had turned to playing mind games in order to maintain their unbeaten record for the campaign.

On with the game and unfortunately for the Foxes, it didn’t get off to a good start and in perhaps Pop’s second attack they broke down the left hand side of our defence to send in a thunderbolt of a shot past Sofia in goal, to end her 8 game cleansheet run and put Pop a goal up.

The Foxes reacted really well after conceding the early goal and were heaping lots of pressure on the Pop goal. 1st with Amy breaking clear, but unfortunately hitting her shot at the goalie to save. Then again with Amy breaking clear on the right and hitting her shot which came off the goalie for Sophie M to pounce, but unluckily for us there was a Pop defender handily positioned to block her shot. It seemed as though all the Foxes excellent work would come to nothing although we were dominating the play. We were made to pay in the final 5 minutes of the half, when again Pop broke down our left hand side to blast a shot against the post, which unluckily for us rebounded to the centre of goal invitingly for the Pop striker to blast into the net. The half ended with Pop 2 goals to the good.

On with the 2nd half and it’s fair to say that the Foxes came under a fair amount of pressure in the 1st 10 minutes, but our defenders Sophie G, Josie, Abby and Sandy were all excellent in repelling the Pop attacks. Sofia in goal also had to be very sharp, once again pulling off a string of excellent saves. As the half wore on, the Foxes began to find their feet and were string some really nice passing movements together in the centre of the park through Sophie M, Dani, Laura, Amy and Georgie who were creating lots of problems for the Pop defence. Emily too was seeing a lot of possession of the ball but just couldn’t find a way past Karen an exceptional Pop defender who stood really firm at the back. We did create some opportunities from distance for Emily and Amy made some great runs, but we always struggled to really test the Pop goalie. We should have had a penalty with 6 minutes remaining when Amy was completely upended by the Pop goalie, however unfortunately for us the ref did not agree. In the dying moments Pop scored again, but the 3-0 final scoreline really did flatter them as we controlled large portions of the game and on another day if luck had run our way we would have run out victors.

Girl of game: Sophie M. Ran her socks off in the centre of the park, getting in lots of vital tackles and interceptions and used the ball really well in possession. Well done Soph, you can take the week off school!

So that is the league campaign over and wherever we finish up it’s been a fantastic and really enjoyable season for the Foxes and I’m certain we can end it on a high with victory in the cup final. Come on girls, we can do it!
