Match report   It was the 1st game of the season for the Foxes and Heworth in the new 9-a-side format with bigger goals, a bigger pitch, 4 more players on the pitch and offside. The question was, how would the girls adapt and would they understand the offside rule? These questions were soon to be answered in this enthralling encounter.

So on with the game and the Foxes with the benefit of a couple of friendlies already under their belt were 1st into their stride, also being wind assisted and going with the slope. The Foxes were heaping pressure in around the Heworth goal mouth with their neat interplay and passing options aboundless for the girl with the ball. On around the 5 minute mark a neat ball was played from Sophie Mole into the path of Amy to finish off, but unfortunately for Amy, the ref had spotted that she’d drifted a yard or 2 offside and the goal was rightly disallowed.

Amy shrugged her shoulders and moments later she was rewarded after stealing possession off the Heworth defence in their own penalty area and finishing off in style. More pressure from the Foxes followed and from a clearance from a Foxes corner, Sophie Grantham strode up from defence unmarked 25 yards from goal and unleashed a thunderbolt that went through a crowd of players and nestled into the bottom corner of the goal. Foxes 2 up and what a belter!

Heworth after been caught rather flat footed in the 1st 10 minutes were beginning to grow in confidence and were now exerting pressure on the Foxes defence, putting in some testing shots from distance, once of which stung Sofia’s hands so much she dropped it into the path of a Heworth striker. Sofia made quick amends and it must have been the good work on the training pitch by dropping quickly at the Heworth striker’s feet to deny a goal.

After sustaining more pressure the Foxes broke once again this time from the left, with Abby playing in a great ball to the feet of Emily, to tuck away neatly from the left side of the penalty area. Half time, 3-0 to the Foxes.

On with the 2nd half and this was a far more even contest, with both teams sharing equal possession and it was becoming a stalemate in the centre of the park. Then on 15 minutes, Heworth were given hope from a neatly worked corner to grab a goal back. It was game back on! The final 10 minutes was end to end and the teams were slugging it out like 2 prize fighters. Next blood was to the Foxes, with Amy picking up the ball from inside her own half to stride up the pitch riding 5 or 6 challenges to put the Foxes 4-1 up. The Heworth coach cried offside ref in desperation, so perhaps it was only he who didn’t understand the offside rule. It was politely explained that this is not possible from a run from within your own half. Moments later it was Heworth’s turn to draw blood and again from a Heworth corner, where the Foxes failed to clear their lines after 2 or 3 air shots to allow Heworth to grab another back. Then with only minutes Emily delt the knock out blow after being played through with a delightful through ball from Dani to make it 5-2 and game over

It was a thoroughly entertaining encounter and clearly all the girls had shown they had adapted well to the bigger game and understood the offside rule.

Foxes girl of the game – Georgie: Tenacious in the tackling and always made herself available down the left of midfield with some fantastic runs on and off the ball.
