Match report   So it was the big one, Foxes away to Poppleton who were maybe still smarting after suffering at the hands of the Foxes in the CYGFL final.

On with the game and for the 1st 10 minutes, the Foxes looked rather nervous and Pop enjoyed most of the possession and were especially dangerous down the flanks. However there was some good defending from both midfielders chasing back to provide support at the back and some steadfast defending from Josie, Abz and Sophie A at the back. Slowly but surely, the Foxes grew in confidence and were beginning to put together some very good moves of their own. On 2 occasions Amy came very close, firstly she was put through by Soph M only to shoot narrowly wide and on the 2nd occasion Amy managed to round the keeper however the larger goal behind the 9-aside goal somewhat put her off and she scored in the 11-a-side goal just narrowly wide unfortunately of the 9-a-side goal. The Foxes also had attempts from Emily, Laura and Soph M however we just couldn’t find the back of the net! Then after around 20 minutes, the Foxes lost concentration in midfield and failed to close Pop down, who ran through pretty much unopposed to put themselves a goal to the good. Minutes later the Foxes responded in fine style, with Amy finishing of after a mazy run. After that the Foxes were rewarded for their fine play in the 1st half with Abz picking up a loose ball and unleashing an absolute beauty which sailed over the keeper’s head into the top corner to give the Foxes a deserved 2-1 lead. I don’t think the Foxes could believe it and from a goal kick moments after we scored, Pop picked up the ball in the centre of the park and once again waltzed through unopposed and scored after a cruel deflection off Abby’s left boot to even up affairs at half time.

On with the 2nd half and the Foxes were very slow out of their traps. We gifted Pop the 3rd after some defensive mishaps and the 4th soon followed after some nice play by the Pop players down their right for the Pop striker to ghost in and convert an excellent cross to put them 4-2 to the good.

After that it was always going to be an uphill struggle and despite the Foxes exerting more pressure on Pop in the last 10 minutes with in particular putting together a very nice move from box to box involving Georgie, Soph M and Beth W which even drew applause from the Pop ref. However we were unable to score again and the game finished 4-2 to Pop.

Bit of a mixed bag this performance from the Foxes. It was a case of the good, the bad and the ugly! If we can cut out the bad and the ugly, I’m certain we can beat any team in this league.

Girl of the Game: Emily – kept the Foxes ticking over from the centre of midfield and put in a number of important tackles. Also, well done too to Laura who was named by Pop as their girl of the game!
